Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Sri Lanka, located in the northwest part of the country. It covers an area of approximately 1,317 square kilometers (508 square miles) and is renowned for its diverse wildlife and natural beauty.  The park is known for its lush vegetation, including dense scrub jungles, lakes (villus), and open grassy plains. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, sloth bears, water buffaloes, spotted deer, and various bird species. The park’s unique feature is the existence of “villus” that attract wildlife for watering and grazing. Wilpattu is renowned for its population of Sri Lankan leopards. It’s considered one of the best places in the country to spot these elusive big cats, although they can be quite elusive due to the park’s dense vegetation. The park is a haven for birdwatchers, with numerous bird species, including painted storks, white ibises, spoonbills, and various raptors. The wetland areas within the park provide important habitats for many bird species. Apart from its diverse wildlife, Wilpattu National Park is characterized by various landscapes, from dense forested areas to grassy plains and coastal belts. The park’s name, “Wilpattu,” is derived from the word “villu,” which means “lake” in Sinhalese, reflecting the presence of numerous lakes and ponds scattered throughout the park. Visitors to Wilpattu can enjoy safaris to explore the park’s beauty and observe its wildlife. These safaris are typically conducted by trained guides and can be done in jeeps, making it a great way to experience the park’s natural wonders.

Dolphin and whale watching

Dolphin and whale watching

Dolphin and whale watching in Kalpitiya is one of the most popular and exciting activities in the area due to its location on the west coast of Sri Lanka, where you can spot several species of dolphins and occasionally even large whales.  Dolphin watching is possible throughout the year, but the best time for consistent sightings is from November to April when the seas are calm. For whale watching, the prime season is from December to April when the sea conditions are most favourable for spotting larger species like blue whales. The most commonly spotted dolphins in Kalpitiya include spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and common dolphins. These playful creatures often swim alongside boats and display acrobatic behavior. While you may not see whales on every trip, the chances of spotting them are higher during the peak season. The main species to look out for are the blue whale (the largest animal on Earth) and the sperm whale.  Remember that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, as animals in their natural habitat are free to move as they please. However, Kalpitiya is considered one of the best places in Sri Lanka to witness these magnificent marine creatures, and the experience of seeing dolphins or whales in the wild can be truly breath-taking and memorable.
